Santorini Film Festival ( 2023)

2023 Santorini Film Festival

13&14 July

The Santorini Film Festival returns for its 6th edition with an even richer and more diverse screening and activities programme. SFF23 will kick off on July 13 at the Tomato Industrial Museum, D.Nomikos with a creative animation workshop for children. Participants will have the chance to make their own short videos inspired by the island’s history and the museum’s exhibits. On July 14, the Santorini Film Festival will take place at the open-air Cine Kamari with a multifaceted screening programme of independent films

Aiming to serve as an entertainment and creativity platform where ideas meet and new ones are born, SFF has been taking place since the first year at the Cine Kamari, a historical cinema that has been an integral part of the local community.

From public squares to neighbourhoods and local cafes at the beginning of the 20th century to Greece’s modern summer cinemas, open-air screening places have always been vital gathering places for socializing and relaxation. Inspired by these cultural places, SFF is taking place in carefully selected outdoor spots that bear witness to the island’s cultural heritage. We aim to highlight Santorini’s history and the way it affects modern-day society as well as the extraordinary landscape.

With this in mind, this year, for the first time, SFF goes to the Tomato Industrial Museum, “D.Nomikos” and invites young cinema lovers to explore the magic of the moving image. The three-hour workshop ‘Animated Tomato’ uses the historical factory as a starting point and invites children from 10-12 years old to discover the basic principles of animation and at the same time learn the production process of tomato juice while sketching and photographing their own film. The workshop aims to entertain and educate participants giving them the chance to experiment with modern and traditional items while exploring the process of creating a team short animation movie using the stop-motion technique.

On July 14, the Santorini Film Festival will take place like every year at the open-air Cine Kamari. Under Cyclades’ starry sky, guests can watch international independent short films that address current issues, take us on a journey to faraway places and expose us to diverse cultures.

From the narrations of three women about their lives in Poland, in Paulina Ziółkowska’s animation film ‘3geNARRATIONS’ to China’s New Year’s Eve rituals in the Firecracker Story, which aims to address how people react to social and historical changes, the international screening programme is diverse and thought-provoking. Among the Greek directors’ movies that will be screened at this year’s edition, are Antonis’ KitsikisAbyssal Zone’ and Alexandros Rellos’ multi-awarded ΤόληςLive or Τορόντο, which has been selected to over 20 international festivals.
