Giving voice to my body with songs from the greek shadow theatre “Karagiozis”
Music and song have always coexisted in a good performance of the shadow theatre and they essentially completed it as popular entertainment and upgraded it as an expression of art.
The introduction of every hero was accompanied as a rule by a song that was either played by the puppeteer himself with a musical instrument, or by a band.
The puppeteers left a mark in their own way, and were the ones who introduced the “folklore opera” to the shadow theatre.
Karagiozi’s performances confirm that music is an inseparable piece of our culture. The melodies were written with passion and respect for tradition while at the same time they encouraged you to experiment with them by changing the lyrics. Musicians and puppeteers gave their own complexion based on their place of origin.
This year the theme of our musical workshops is Karagiozis.
Stella Chronaiou, in a collaboration with the wonderful musician and puppeteer Dimos Bougioukas, will help us discover the shadow theatre and its characters through their songs and their voices. We will learn how the shadow puppets are created and how a Karagiozis show is setup.
With love and respect for tradition, we will sing and learn new melodies written with ardour and passion in different parts of Greece, and we will have fun learning about the comedic aspect of the songs.
At the end of the workshop cycle, Dimos Bougioukas will perform a Karagiozis show accompanied musically by the children that participated in the workshop!
