Today, Wednesday 24/5/2023, the female and male students of the Special Primary School of Fira, Thira participated in the educational visit of our school to the Tomato Industrial Museum D. Nomikos in Vlychada, Thira. At the museum, we were welcomed with special warmth and hospitality by the staff of the museum.
The tour took place in all areas of the museum, factory and exhibition space, as well as there was also a special video screening about the history of the traditional Santorini tomato on the island of Thira.
The students of our school had the opportunity to see the traditional Santorini tomatoes up close, cut them and place them in the special machine in order to see how the paste is made. They also kept the tomato seeds in special bags to plant with their families.
The pleasant surprise of today’s educational visit is that the children created their own special tomato-themed labels and decorated their own tins of pulp with them and took them with them as a pleasant memory of our field trip today.
We sincerely thank the Staff for the hospitality in the very beautiful space, exterior and interior, of the Tomato Industrial Museum D. Nomikos in Vlychada, Thira, but also for offering a treat of pulp to all of us, students and educational staff. We also learned from Mr. Iosif Perros, a member of the staff, that on the island of Thira in the old days there was a special school for people with trachoma, a serious eye disease, and we are glad that the island of Thera has been an island since the old days of support for people who were facing this particular vision difficulty and it is the wish of all of us that the citizens of Thira are always aware and aware of what concerns disability, the acceptance of diversity and the inclusion of people with disabilities equally in society.
We are also very grateful to KTEL Thiras for our safe transportation and the consistency in planning our school’s educational visit on time.
