Known for its Caldera, Assyrtiko wine, breathtaking sunsets, and unique architecture with domed houses, Santorini will host, for the first time this summer, the festival “In the Shadow of the Kore,” filling the calendar with concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events.
On Wednesday, July 9, the festival kicks off with its first concert, featuring three brilliant voices promising a truly special experience! Maria Anamaterou, Aspasia Stratigou, and Violeta Ikari invite us to dance in open and closed circles — to dance in pairs and face to face at their own traditional celebration.
Joining them on stage will be exceptional violin virtuosos Sotiris Margonis, Theologos Michellis, and Nikos Fakaros, with Giannoulis Margonis on guitar and Dimitris Rentas on laouto (lute). The performance is the brainchild of renowned composer and researcher of traditional music, Michalis Koumbios.
The recent renovation of the Archaeological Museum of Santorini and the exhibition of the island’s own Kore statue — along with a vital piece of its authentic heritage — 25 years after its discovery on the island, serves as the inspiration behind the creation of the “In the Shadow of the Kore” festival. In a year where it’s most needed, the Kore becomes a symbol, igniting a series of events that celebrate feminine energy and artistry.
But who is the Kore? An impressive 7th-century BC sculpture, the Kore belongs to the class of “Kouroi” and “Korai” — archetypal statues representing idealized beauty and form. Standing nearly 2.5 meters tall, it is one of the largest and best-preserved archaic statues ever found. Discovered in 2000 by archaeologist Charalampos Sigalas, the statue’s unveiling was a major cultural milestone for both the island and the global archaeological community.
