Basket Weaving Workshop at the Tomato Industrial Museum “D. Nomikos”
The Tomato Industrial Museum “D. Nomikos” invites you to another two-day workshop of traditional wicker basket weaving, on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August 2025, as part of the exhibition “Traces of Theraean Folklore”, which is under the auspices of the Municipality of Thira, for the Year of Authenticity 2025.
This is our intangible cultural heritage, knowledge that has been bequeathed and deserves to be protected and preserved.
Basket weaving on our island has a long history. From the charred baskets in Complex D, of prehistoric Akrotiri to the baskets that farmers used until recently to transport our tomatoes.
Come and learn the secrets of basketry from Yiannis Massas, the workshop manager, son of a basket maker.
Anyone interested can also help in collecting the wicker.
You will need to bring garden gloves, gardening scissors and a good mood!!

Duration 3 hours.
Number of participants 20 people. Priority order will be observed.
