Educational Activities, Tours & Play for Everyone!
The Industrial Tomato Museum “D. Nomikos” launches the new school year with a series of educational programs and family-friendly activities, designed to bring learning to life through play and fun.
Guided by the history of the tomato and its role in the industrial and social development of Santorini, the programs combine knowledge, play, and discovery. Children and parents will have the chance to learn about the production of tomato paste, explore the historic factory, and take part in creative workshops that nurture imagination, knowledge, creativity, and collaboration.
As part of the “Year of Highlighting and Supporting Authenticity”, visitors will also tour two temporary exhibitions, presented alongside the Museum’s permanent collection:
-
“Traces of Theraic Folklore”
-
“Theraic Rituals”
These exhibitions showcase the island’s traditions through folklore artifacts and works of art, enriching the educational experience with vivid images of Santorini’s cultural heritage.
Shared parent–child participation is more than a pleasant activity — it is an opportunity for meaningful communication, a moment for generations to share time creatively, to work side by side, exchange ideas, and strengthen their bond through knowledge and play.
Learning through Experience – Creating Together!
Activities
“The Tomato Factory”
Discover the Museum’s collection: machines, tools, carts, stories, and books “come to life” and take us on a journey from the pre-industrial to the modern era, with the tomato as our “travel companion.”
The experience is enhanced with digital material and concludes with a tomato paste tasting.
“Design My Own Label – Seal My Own Can”
Inspired by the factory’s historic labels, we explore the role of logos and brand identity, design our own label, apply it to a tin, and seal it using an authentic machine that still operates today.
“Oral Testimonies Screening”
A short film with the voices of farmers and workers of the time highlights daily life in the factory and key local events, such as the great flood of 1953.
“Cooking Tomato Paste”
Children and parents join the production process step by step — from seed and skin to the final product — and finish with a paste tasting.
“Create My Own Basket”
An introduction to traditional basket weaving: developing fine motor skills, cooperation, and patience. With simple materials, children and parents create unique handmade objects, connecting tradition with today.
