Basket Weaving Workshop at the Tomato Industrial Museum “D. Nomikos”

Basket Weaving Workshop at the Tomato Industrial Museum “D. Nomikos”

The Tomato Industrial Museum “D. Nomikos” invites you to a two-day traditional basket weaving workshop using wicker, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July 2025. The event is part of the exhibition “Traces of Thiran Folklore”, held under the auspices of the Municipality of Thira for the 2025 Year of Authenticity.

This is part of our intangible cultural heritage — a valuable body of knowledge passed down through generations that deserves to be protected and preserved.

Basket weaving on our island has a long-standing tradition. From the carbonized baskets found in Complex D of the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, to the baskets that local farmers used until recently to carry our unique Santorini tomatoes.

Come and discover the secrets of basket weaving with Giannis Massa, the workshop instructor and son of a traditional basket maker.

Anyone interested is also welcome to join in the gathering of wicker.

Please bring gardening gloves and your good spirits!
