The Santorini Arts Factory of the Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos” invites you on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 August at 21.00 to Anastasia Parava’s performance “Hikaru 輝 ray of light”.
A site-specific performance, an installation in movement, that transforms, evolves and mutates … it never stays the same. Just like nature, like ourselves, like everything that surrounds us..
“Hikaru”, originating from Japanese, translates to “Ray of Light.”
It embodies the concept of a radiant beam that not only illuminates our journey during challenging times but also nurtures our inner being.
It serves as a metaphorical light that brings clarity to the aspects of ourselves that remain obscured.
Hikaru represents the essential need to find harmony and resolution with anything that troubles us, fostering peace within.
We begin with the foundational action, the verb “to be, to exist”.
To exist in shadow, to exist in light, to exist as good or bad,
To exist in joy, in sorrow, in rage, in fear, or in courage,
To exist as if I am my mother, my father, my ancestors…
Yet, who am I truly, in the end?
Hikaru is the main character; through a coming-of-age journey he discovers his deepest, essential self..
By confronting his duality, he chooses. Which side will he choose? The bright or the dark side?
Through the story of Hikaru we introduce “L’altro teatro”.
“L’altro Teatro” embodies the essence of visual storytelling through the artful interplay of light and shadow, constructing and deconstructing poetic images that mesmerize and captivate the audience. Fluid, subtle, and rigid forms and materials are masterfully employed to weave a tapestry of illusions, inviting viewers into a realm where perception is fluid and ever-shifting. Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of oriental shadow theatre, our performance offers spectators a multi-dimensional experience, allowing them to witness the emergence and dissolution of shadows and light from diverse points. Each viewing angle unveils a unique perspective, infusing every vision with its own narrative significance.
Embracing simplicity as our guiding principle, we rely exclusively on analog mediums and tools, having hand-held flashlights serving as our primary instruments.
Through metamorphosis and distortion and the use of electroacoustic music and soundscapes, we blur the lines between reality and imagination, while the interplay of shadow, light, and projection angles imbues each scene with layers of symbolic depth and metaphorical resonance. “L’altro Teatro” transcends mere spectacle to become a journey of introspection and revelation, inviting audiences to explore the intricate interplay of perception and reality in a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow.
Artistic identity and techniques:
Our artistic approach is experimental, an attempt to let go into the unconscious. We build and form narratives and images through analog mediums, through the use of light and darkness, physical theatre, soundscapes, the use of masks and objects and the projections of handmade drawings.
