With renewed interest and the same enduring love for local history, the “D. Nomikos” Tomato Industrial Museum is once again welcoming visitors starting from Holy Tuesday, April 15. Guests will have the opportunity to discover the unique journey of the Santorini tomato — from cultivation to processing and tomato paste production — while also getting to know the island’s industrial heritage.
The historic site, which operated as a processing plant for Santorini’s small-fruited tomato from 1945 to 1981, was transformed into a modern museum in 2014. Today, it stands as a vibrant cultura
l hub in the heart of rural Santorini, where history, art, and technology converge to highlight the importance of the tomato in global gastronomy and economy.
Through multi-themed exhibitions, interactive displays, and educational activities, the museum creatively approaches the local cultural identity, making the space an active cultural agent for both residents and visitors.
Particular emphasis is placed on integrating digital innovation. Through the DEAR Museum Project, carried out in collaboration with the University of Patras and the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Architecture, visitors can experience scenes from the factory’s daily life through augmented reality. The project was part of the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPAnEK)” and adds a new, dynamic chapter to the museum’s narrative.
The experience is completed with a tasting of tomato paste and the chance for visitors to create their own souvenir can using an authentic vintage machine. At the same time, the museum offers free individual audio guides available in five languages: Greek, English, French, German, and Italian.
A highlight once again this year will be our educational programs, where not only students but also visitors can cook tomato paste. Additionally, inspired by the labels of the “D. Nomikos” products, participants discover the graphic representation of a brand and unleash their creativity by designing their own label, which they then apply to their personalized cans.
Through our hands-on activities, visitors can also explore the secrets of the Mediterranean diet in a unique culinary experience and sample classic Greek flavors.
The “D. Nomikos” Tomato Industrial Museum is open daily, from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., inviting young and old alike on a journey into the tradition and innovation of the tomato in Santorini.
