An open discussion as part of the International Scientific Symposium “Governing in Times of Crisis: Implications for Society”
What is the future of the Cyclades in an era of constant change and challenges? How can tourism development coexist with environmental protection, residents’ quality of life, and the preservation of the islands’ unique identity?
These are some of the questions that will be at the heart of the public event of the International Scientific Symposium “Governing in Times of Crisis: Implications for Society”, at the Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos” on Thursday, 1 October at 19:00.
The event, entitled “The Cyclades in Times of Crisis: Sustainability and Resilience”, will open the International Scientific Symposium, which will take place in Santorini from 1 to 3 October 2026. The Symposium is organized by the Centre for Policy Research of Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, in collaboration with Rhodes College (Memphis, Tennessee, USA) and the academic journal Review of Policy Research (RPR), with the support of the Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos”, diaNEOsis and the ECPR Research Network on the Politics of Crisis Management.
A Discussion on Santorini and the Cyclades
Starting from Santorini and looking at the broader challenges facing island communities, the discussion will focus on the impact of contemporary tourism development, the pressures placed on the environment and landscape, as well as the changes shaping everyday life and local identity.
At the same time, it will highlight the role of cultural heritage, local traditions, narratives and collective memory in maintaining social cohesion and shaping sustainable and resilient island communities.
The discussion will be moderated by Faye Makanatsi, Director of Research at diaNEOsis, with the participation of:

Following the discussion, there will be an open dialogue with the public, giving attendees the opportunity to take part in the conversation about the present and future of the Cyclades.
The International Symposium
The three-day symposium brings together emerging and established researchers from Greece and abroad, with the aim of examining how public policy is formulated and implemented in periods of crisis and uncertainty. Its proceedings will explore governance issues at the local, national and supranational levels, with themes including tourism, public health, the economy and the environment.
