The Tomato Festival is the tradition we have been waiting for!

The 1st Santorini Tomato Festival was successfully held at the Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos”, welcoming a remarkable number of residents and visitors to a celebration dedicated to the unique Santorini cherry tomato, its cultivation, the people who continue to support it, and the island’s unique industrial heritage.

The inaugural event was embraced with great enthusiasm by the local community, confirming that the renowned dry-farmed small-fruited tomato remains a powerful symbol of the island’s history, gastronomy, and cultural identity.

Visitors enjoyed a vibrant evening filled with local flavours, traditional music and dance performances, exhibitions, guided museum tours and engaging activities for children. Together, these experiences highlighted and celebrated Santorini’s industrial and cultural heritage, creating a festive atmosphere that brought together people of all generations.

The festival was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Municipality of Thira and D. Nomikos, as well as the dedication of dozens of volunteers and friends of the Museum, whose invaluable contribution played a vital role in the event’s success. Equally important was the participation of the island’s cultural associations, official supporters, local producers, musicians and dancers, all of whom generously contributed their time and expertise.

The Santorini Tomato Festival demonstrates how collaboration and the shared love for our island can create meaningful traditions that help preserve Santorini’s authentic identity for future generations.

One of the most symbolic moments of the festival was the temporary revival of tomato processing within the historic factory itself. For the first time since the factory ceased operations in 1981, Santorini cherry tomatoes were processed once again and fresh tomato juice was produced in the very same space that now operates as the Museum. This symbolic initiative sought to reconnect the island’s industrial past with its present while paying tribute to the factory workers and local producers whose dedication established the Santorini cherry tomato as a product of international recognition.

The Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos” would like to express its sincere gratitude to:

  • The Municipality of Thira and D. Nomikos for their generous sponsorship.
  • Our supporters Estia Pyrgou, Santo Wines, Multimedia Events, Kapetan Loizos Tavern and Beyond Bread for their valuable contribution.
  • The local producers Santo Wines and Yiannis Nomikos Estate Santorini for participating in this initiative.
  • The cultural associations Estia Pyrgou Kallistis Thiras, the Cultural & Athletic Association of Akrotiri Thira, the Cultural & Folklore Association of Megalochori “To Metochi”, the Cultural Association of Emporio Thira, the Cultural & Beautification Association of Imerovigli and the Cultural Association of Kontochori Santorini, who enthusiastically prepared and offered traditional dishes and local delicacies, showcasing the rich gastronomy of Santorini.
  • Musicians Antonis Arvanitis and Giorgos Sigalas, together with Artemia Denaxa and the dance groups of Estia Pyrgou Kallistis Thiras and the Cultural Association of Emporio Thira, whose performances and dedication to local tradition gave the festival its authentic spirit.
  • Our partners, volunteers, producers and everyone who contributed in any way to the success of this first edition.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who responded so warmly to our invitation. The remarkable turnout fills us with optimism and confirms that the Santorini Tomato Festival has the potential to become an important annual institution for the island, celebrating not only this unique local product but also Santorini’s history, its people and its culture.

The Tomato Industrial Museum “D.Nomikos” remains committed to its mission of preserving and promoting Santorini’s industrial heritage through initiatives that connect the island’s past with its present and future. Through events such as the Tomato Festival, the Museum continues to serve as a vibrant center of culture, education and creativity, where memory becomes inspiration and tradition lays the foundation for tomorrow.

We look forward to welcoming everyone again next year with even more activities, new collaborations, and the same passion for the Santorini cherry tomato and the remarkable story it continues to tell.
